Shruthi Jois
Shruthi Jois was born in 1981 in Bangalore. Ashtanga yoga was unfamiliar to her when she married Sharath Jois at the age of 19 on February 14, 2000. At the time, Sharath Guruji was emerging as an expert yoga master, training directly under the guidance of his grandfather, the legendary K. Pattabhi Jois.
Married into a family of yoga gurus, Shruthi was quickly introduced to the daily practice of yoga. She embraced it wholeheartedly, surrendering completely to her first and only guru, Sharath Guruji. Over the next few years, she learned the Primary Series of Ashtanga yoga from him, and she often reflects on his teachings with deep gratitude, believing he was the best teacher one could have had and that he possessed “magic in his palms”.
Recognising her natural aptitude for teaching, Sharathji encouraged Shruthi to begin guiding beginner practitioners. In 2008, she started teaching yoga to students of GSSS Institute of Engineering and Technology for Women in Mysore. Then, in 2012, she launched an afternoon Mysore programme at the K. Pattabhi Jois Ashtanga Yoga Institute in Gokulam. Her classes attracted a steady stream of students, including local residents and the spouses and children of Guruji’s students, who sought her guidance in their yoga practice.
In addition to teaching, Shruthi accompanied her husband on his teaching tours, assisting him with his morning practice. As her children, Shraddha and Sambhav, grew older, her focus shifted toward caring for them and supporting their studies and daily routines. As a result, she took a break from teaching in 2017.
Shruthi believes that her own daily Ashtanga practice has been transformative, both physically and mentally, making her stronger, more focused, and resilient. The benefits became especially evident after her children’s births, both of which were via C-section, leaving her body physically weak. She believes that yoga practice helps maintain youthfulness—both in body and mind.
After the untimely passing of Guruji Sharath Jois, Shruthi is now dedicated to ensuring the Sharath Yoga Centre—built with so much passion and care by her husband—continues to thrive.
